Montana: the Ideal Vacation Destination

Real vacations are for free adventurers at heart who live by the Tolkien quote, “Not all who wander are lost.”

Those of us who are single desire those Instagram-worthy locations to share our wanderings with the world. Our family-oriented counterparts are searching for beauty, fun and relaxation. Both are ambitious desires and yet both can easily be fulfilled in Montana. Below I’ve gladly compiled my favorite places visit and adventures to go on while zooming around the Big Sky State this summer.

  1. Hiking in Glacier National Park

In the summer, droves of my friends head for Glacier where they undertake enviable hikes. Iceberg Lake and the Highline are classic hikes that you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy. The enormous mountains surround intense blue lakes which are always breathtaking. And isn’t that what Maya Angelou said life is all about? Kids and adults alike will love cooling down with a delightful huckleberry ice cream cone. It’s a one of a kind treat specific to the area and not easily forgotten!

  1. Farmer’s Markets in Missoula

As a Missoula resident, I am partial to our local events. Truly nothing beats a summer weekend in the Garden City. Start your Saturday with an early morning farmer’s market trip. Don’t forget to grab and iced coffee from Black Coffee Roasting Co as you wander down rows of delicious and fresh produce. When you’re ready for breakfast, munch on a famous waffle wrap filled with bacon, egg, avocado and cheese. Grab some local supplies like a dixon melon, fresh cheeses, cured meats and some Ten Spoon wine for an al fresco lunch. With a start to your day like that, you’ll be set up for vacation success!

  1. White-water Rafting in Yellowstone National Park

This is definitely one of the coolest ways to see the park. For years, the classic Yellowstone experience was dusty campgrounds and car rides through packed roads. Thankfully, Montana adventurers have begun to curate action-packed vacations. Riding the crashing waves through the park while you watch the gorgeous scenery is perhaps one of the most exciting vacation ideas. It’s a sweet way to take in all of those incredible animal sightings like bald eagles and bison! And if you feel like you haven’t really been to Montana until you have an Instagram photo on a horse, then you can choose to see the park by rafting and horseback riding! This is a definite favorite of mine as it always brings excitement, laughter and awe.

  1. A Weekend on the Flathead

Visiting Flathead Lake in the summer is a western Montana MUST. Locals spend their afternoons zipping around the lake on jet skis, or if you’re a little less adventurous, try renting a paddle boat. When you’re ready for a snack break, head to a street side vendor for a pound of fresh Flathead cherries. Then, it’s time to get ready for a delightful dinner at Finley Point Grill. The service is amazing and the food is even better. I recommend the top sirloin steak paired with a glass from their delightful wine selection.

As you can see, Montana is a dream. It has everything a vacation-bound individual or family is looking to find. Come visit, I can guarantee gorgeous surroundings, friendly people and a desire to never leave!
