Wizard of Oz Delights at the Jesters in Longmont, CO

Kids of all ages will enjoy the Jesters Dinner Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz, which is running on weekends (Friday evening, Saturday matinee and evening, Sunday matinee) until July 7, 2019.

The musical follows the original classic movie closely, so what’s not to love?

In addition to the classic songs (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” If I Only Had a Brain/Heart/the Noive,” “King of the Forest” ) and well-remembered dialog from the movie, the backstory of some of the characters has been expanded.

When Dorothy rushes home with Toto, after her discerning dog has bitten Miss Gulch, she goes to each of the three handimen who talk about brains, heart and courage. When Miss Gulch arrives to take Toto to be destroyed, none of them will stand up to Miss Gulch. Dorothy vents her anger on them, a foreshadowing of what will occur in Oz – for example when Dorothy accuses Hickory of not caring about her or Toto, he clutches at his chest as if she’s broken his heart. In Oz, Hickory has been turned into the Tin Man, without a heart.

In the production seen by this reviewer, Emily Skinner played the spunky Dorothy, Aunt Em was Ann Massengill and Scott Ramsey played the overwhelmed Uncle Henry – as well as delivering a fine comic performance as the Gatekeeper to the city of Oz.

Darec Goheen as the Tin Man, Josh Lostroh as Cowardly Lion and Scott Moore as Scarecrow played their roles with relish. Lostroh’s Brooklyn accent as he sang “King of the Forest” was spot on. Pat Massengill played both Professor Marvel and the Wizard of Oz with calm authority.

Jesi Hitch dominated each of her scenes as the Wicked Witch, with a little humor thrown in. For example when she sees her sister’s legs and shoes beneath Dorothy’s house, she comments, “Who else would wear ruby slippers with those socks?”

The supporting cast have a lot of fun, with the Munchkins dancing, the Crows getting in some parting puns as Scarecrow and Dorothy leave Scarecrow’s cornfield, the Trees and their parting puns in the enchanted forest, and the Poppies in the field just outside the city of Oz.

The Wizard of Oz is a fun experience for the entire family, and even for adults who just want to experience again the proof that “there’s no place like home.”
