Camping is an activity that touches the very roots of human existence. Jones Pass Road

The drive to reach this site is one of the more appealing four-wheel drive trails you can find close to Denver. It is perfect for anyone who is visiting Denver, but does not have the time to drive across the state for a day or two. The road is tough, but it presents an opportunity for gorgeous scenery if you’re up to it. Once you’ve made camp, you can also hike Vasquez Trail or the Continental Divide Trail while you take a break from the back-breaking off-roading.

Cottonwood Pass

If you are into the whole Colorado mountain town thing, Buena Vista is just about the mold for such places. Only two hours from Denver, this again is a perfect trip for those who do not have the time to spend three or four days out in the wild. The cool part about this area is that there is a cool town right by you, and you can easily stock up on supplies and amenities when you pass through it. Because, let’s face it, as hard as we try to remember everything, something is always forgotten.

If you drive along Country Road 306, the pavement will eventually turn to dirt and you can pick from a number of different camping spots along the way. And if you’re looking for some hiking while you stay, Mt. Yale isn’t too far off, and it is one the cooler hikes in the area!

Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes provides great camping no matter how you want to go about it. The scenic views of the mountains surrounding the lake are in and of themselves worth the trip. Among the others in this list, this campsite is probably the most secluded, so it is perfect for those peaceful night fires after your engine has echoed through the canyons. And if you’re really feeling adventurous, La Plata is only a couple miles down the road to give you a tough and thrilling hike on the side!

Kebler Pass

This area may be the most beautiful area on this list. The sunsets seem as if they are lighting the tree tops on fire under the gorgeous mountain skyline. There really is no way to describe the breathtaking beauty of the area.

Head up Forest Road 706, and as you approach Lost Lake Campground toward the end, you’ll get higher in elevation, and you’ll notice numerous off shoots to other campgrounds and dirt roads for your enjoyment. You really can’t go astray in this area, because each dirt road, no matter how rough, eventually leads to a pretty amazing campsite. You could choose a different road every day, and camp at a new site each night!

Colorado is a pretty amazing place, and wherever you choose to roam, there will undoubtedly be a multitude of options for you and your friends to choose from and plenty of backwoods, off-road driving to mud the day away with the best of them.
