Summer in the Rocky Mountain region offers a full calendar of rodeos that honor the Western heritage of the area. One such event is the Greeley Stampede (also known as the Greeley Independence Stampede), held each year in Greeley, Colorado.

The Stampede tradition dates back to the late 1800s. By the 1920s, the Greeley Spud Rodeo was said to be the largest festival in the world and honored local potato farmers. This early fair featured bucking bronc riding, fancy roping, a pie eating contest, a horse race, and bicycle races. The current name—the Greeley Independence Stampede—came about in 1972 through a community contest.

In 2003, a bit of controversy made its way into the Stampede corral when the governing committee announced that the event would adopt the name Rocky Mountain Stampede, in an effort to recognize its growing regional and national prominence. A public outcry ensued, and the name reverted to the Greeley Stampede shortly thereafter.

This year’s event—the 97th annual—will be held June 22 through July 4, 2018 at Island Grove Park in Greeley. PRCA rodeo events, bull riding, concerts, carnival rides and a Western art show highlight the two-week run. Not-to-be-missed events are the Independence Day Parade through the streets of Greeley and the daily (6:00 PM) parade through the Stampede grounds where visitors have an up-close and personal view of longhorn steers as they mosey by.
