Scrooge at Jesters Dinner Theatre, Longmont Co

It’s December, and that means only one thing at the Jesters Dinner Theatre in Longmont, CO. It’s time for Scrooge!

The Jesters’ annual holiday production of Scrooge has become a much-anticipated tradition, so much so that they add extra days to the run.  Scrooge will play Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until December 16. Starting on Monday, December 17, it will be playing every day, and twice on Sundays, until December 30!

Scrooge is perfectly suited for the intime theatre that is the Jesters – there’s not a bad seat in the house, with even the furthest ones being just a few dozen feet from the stage. Because of this, the audience always feels like they’re right in on the action, perhaps as pedestrians on the London street while Scrooge makes his perambulations seeking out the people who owe him money, or as fellow guests at nephew Fred’s dinner party.

Scott Moore plays the old miser with relish. His Scrooge is an old, bitter man, but has a sense of humor as well, in particularly when he’s stalking through the audience, pausing to offer some financial advice to one or two of the patrons as he goes on  his merry Christmas way.

Moore also delivers the fear and the heart-aching regret that the role demands, whether he’s begging his younger self to not let Isabel go, or singing the low lament of “You, You, You” as he watches her walk out of his life forever.

The Scrooge company is large, with most characters triple-cast so actors can return to their favorite roles – another of the Jesters’ traditions.

In the production seen by this reviewer, Marley’s Ghost was played with just enough chills but also some fine comic timing by Jim Berthold, especially in the Hell scene when he responds to Scrooge’s pleas to “help me,” by picking up a length of chain that had missed its mark and considerately draping it about Scrooge’s shoulders.

Danny Bohnen was as ebullient as the Ghost of Christmas Present needs to be, delivering the song “I Like Life” with panache.

The choreography for the dance scenes of Fezziwig’s “December the 25th” party is a lot of fun, as is that when hot soup man Tom Jenkins’ (Scotty Bohnen) fellow debtors to Scrooge gather to dance and sing “Thank you very much,” as the all-too oblivious Scrooge delightedly joins in.

Scrooge is always a fun, heart-warming show, and this year’s edition at the Jesters does not disappoint.
