Photo Essay: Crazy Horse Memorial

Mere miles away from Mount Rushmore, near Keystone, South Dakota,  is the Crazy Horse Memorial.  (crazyhorsememorial.org/)

In 1939, Oglala Lakota chief Standing Bear asked sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who had assisted (briefly) Gutzon Borglum on the Mount Rushmore sculptures, to carve a monument to Crazy Horse – who had been killed in 1877.  It took Korczak a while to find a suitable mountain, obtain ownership, and obtain funds for the sculpture – a fascinating story in itself.

Korczak’s entire family worked on the gigantic sculpture, or the Memorial (the surrounding buildings) in some fashion, and four of them continue to do so to this day.

Progress on the memorial is very slow, as the sculptors are hampered by weather conditions practically every week. According to the tour guide who took me and others to the “photo op” site, another crew of sculptors has been hired and more machinery is in place so that they hope the pace of the work can increase.

Below is a photo essay of the Crazy Horse Memorial.

I stopped by the side of the road at the first clear glimpse of the Crazy Horse Monument. I wanted a photo that showed how far it could be seen from a distance. (Look to the left of the photo. You can make out the profile and just barely make out the arm. There’s a crane on top of the head)

I visited the Crazy Horse Memorial at the beginning of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The upper lot had been given over entirely to motorcyclist parking.
