Jekyll & Hyde is Darkly Captivating at the Jesters

Dr. Henry Jekyll – kind, considerate, passionate about his work, and with a bit of a temper –  believes that each person is inhabited by “good” and “evil,” and that a person’s evil nature can be separated out and eradicated.

Jekyll, aided by his prospective father-in-law, Sir Danvers Carew and his friend and lawyer, John Utterson, presents a proposal to the Board of Governors of St. Jude’s Hospital – an insane asylum where his own father happens to be a patient – to test his formula [presumably on his father]. He is rejected.

Despite the fact that Jekyll is due to marry Emma Carew within a matter of months, he decides that he has no choice but to test his formula on himself. Unfortunately…there is an unexpected development.

Most of the roles in Jekyll & Hyde are double-cast, as is usual at this theatre.

In the performance seen by this reviewer, Hailey Ewing did what she could with the rather underwritten role of Emma Carew, Henry Jekyll’s fiance. She is steadfast to him (“Take Me As I Am” and “Once Upon a Dream”) and never waivers even when he has disappeared for weeks on end just prior to their wedding day.

Alex Colin was affecting in the more tragic role of Lucy Harris, the prostitute at the Red Rat Inn who sees a chance of a better life with the gentlemanly Dr. Jekyll (“Sympathy, Tenderness” and “Someone Like You”), but who unfortunately also has caught the eye of the lascivious Mr. Hyde as well.

Danny Bohnen owned the stage as both Jekyll and Hyde.

As the hapless Dr. Jekyll e was confident in his abilities, driven, an upstanding gentleman both morally and physically.  As he transforms rather terrifyingly into Mr. Hyde everything changes, from his stance and the way he carries himself, to his voice, to the maniacal grin that gives a hint of the murderous fury within.

The showstopper is “The Confrontation,” in which Jekyll and Hyde battle for supremacy within Hyde’s body. Bohnen’s instant changes from Jekyll and Hyde and back again were mesmerizing.

The ensemble cast – eventually somewhat decimated by Hyde – included such standbys as Steve Byrne as the hypocritical Bishop and Jim Berthold as the pompous General Lord Glossop, Scotty Bohnen as Jekyll’s lawyer who desperately tries to help his doomed friend, and Scott Moore as the sympathetic Sir Danvers Carew.
