Hashtag Travvie: McDonald’s are Bigger in Texas

Hashtag #travvie – a quick “blog” entry on something I’ve seen or thought while on a trip…

I’ve just returned from a whirlwind trip to Texas, driving from Cheyenne east on I-80 to North Platte, Nebraska, then south on 83 to Abilene, Texas, then east on 20 to some other road such that I eventually got to Burleson, Texas, southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth. There I picked up an elderly aunt and brought her back to Cheyenne to visit my mom.

I took this route because I did not want to have to drive through Denver, or through Dallas-Fort Worth. I-80 and 83 have the perfect amount of traffic – none. Perhaps one or two cars behind or in front of me at a time…I-20 east toward Dallas-Fort Worth was a bit more busy, but still not as congested as the major highways would have been if I’d taken I-25 through Denver, there hooking up with I-70 to go east…

Long story short, if you want to drive somewhere, there are smaller, less-congested highways than the interstates that are less trying on your nerves!

Collecting Routes

I’m a collector – of experiences as well as souvenirs. A couple of years ago I decided to “collect” all my journeys in a Road Atlas. Whenever I drive anywhere, I highlight the route I took in yellow. Eventually I’d like to have yellow on every page of the atlas – for every state of the Union.

I buy a magnet for each state I visit, and when I visit an “attraction” – a museum or something, I pick up a ball cap or a t-shirt.

Some time ago, I read of a guy who was travelling across country, stopping in at every McDonalds to have a cup of coffee.

Eventually I’d like to do that, too, although I’d have an ice cream sundae – coffee not being my cup of tea.

But the idea is to visit a fast-food restaurant that covers the entire country – and I think McDonalds is probably the only fast-f00d restaurant in every state, and see how it differs from others. Typically everything in a fast-food restaurant is supplied by “corporate” so food tastes the same everywhere, but there are regional differences – some McDonalds might offer a type of food in the south that they don’t offer anywhere else.

To cut a long story short, I stopped in at Weatherford, Texas, and found that McDonalds to be chock full of Western flavor.

Perhaps not all McDonald’s in Texas have the same Western theme – but I do remember on a previous trip to Texas I had stopped in at a McDonald’s in Abilene and it also had a cowboy Ronald greeting guests outside the building, so I’m willing to bet quite a few of them do.

This is not an advertisement for McDonald’s per se.  But if you like whimsy – or kitsch – stopping in at any fast-food restaurant while on your travels to check out their décor, to see if it has been customized for the state or city – could be fun.
