Find Your Western Spirit at Denver’s National Western Stock Show

The National Western Stock Show is a Denver tradition that began in 1906.  It involves more than 15,000 animals, rodeos, horse shows, livestock competitions, and auctions.  Plus, there are acres of shopping at Colorado’s largest Western trade show, where you can buy everything from boots, belts, and hats to horse trailers and agricultural equipment.

The National Western isn’t just a place where city slickers can put on their cowboy duds and enjoy our country’s Old West heritage.  It was established 113 years ago as a venue to demonstrate better livestock breeding and feeding techniques to area farmers and ranchers.  The event still serves those needs today.

At noon on the Thursday before the Stock Show opens, Denver’s downtown visitors and business people are treated to the sight of longhorn cattle being herded down city streets.  Spectators enjoy a true western cattle drive plus horses, cowboys, cowgirls, tractors,, western wagons, marching bands and floats.  The National Western Stock Show parade is indeed a sight to behold.  (Before heading downtown for the parade, check the link above.  Rarely, extreme weather conditions will cause the parade to be canceled.)

A BIT OF STOCK SHOW TRIVIA—The Brown Palace Hotel at 321 Seventeenth Street in Denver is arguably the best address in town.  But who was Bubba and why was he hangin’ out in the lobby of the Brown Palace?

Since 1945, The Brown Palace has played host to a very special visitor from the National Western Stock Show.  For one day each January, towards the end of the Stock Show’s annual run, crowds gather to watch as a champion steer is unloaded and escorted—down a red carpet—into the hotel lobby.  He is secured in a special pen where a hotel employee is given the honored task of serving his water in a polished silver bowl.  Bubba was the honored bovine guest at the hotel in 1988.

Imagine the surprise of unsuspecting visitors when they walk into The Brown Palace’s elegant lobby only to see (and perhaps smell) this grand beast on display.
