Coffee House Reviews: Dazbog Coffee in Cheyenne

I drove north up Yellowstone Rd to its intersection with Vanderhei Street this afternoon, turned right on Vanderhei and then immediately right onto Yellowtail to take a photo of one of Cheyenne’s newest Big Boots, the Dental Art Boot at 7010 Yellow Tail Rd.

Across Vanderhei to the north is a Maverik gas station, and behind the Maverik gas station is a Dazbog Coffee house in a building called the Commons. It’s address is actually 7124 Commons Avenue, Suite A.

I decided I would choose the Dazbog Coffee shop for my first Culinary Curmudgeon review for Wyoming in Motion.

This location is open from 6 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, and 7 am to 7 pm on weekends. There’s a drive through, for folks who need their coffee before they get to work!

Opening times for Dazbog Coffee Cheyenne

I entered Dazbog and was struck immediately by its “neighborhood” feel – there was a bulletin board in the entrance alcove featuring posters for all sorts of events taking place in Cheyenne and the Rocky Mountain region.

The coffee shop itself, at 2:30 pm, had a few customers. A woman in one corner was sipping a drink with a laptop on the table in front of her, taking advantage of the free wif fi. There were two women in another corner, chatting amongst themselves and, over their heads, two clocks – one with Cheyenne time and one with Moscow time.

Always know what time it is. Also the story of the founding of Dazbog by Russian immigrants Leonid and Anatoly

There was another woman with another laptop in a table for one next to the hallway leading to the bathrooms, and two sixty-ish men having a talk in a booth over their coffees.

I liked the décor of the relatively small drinking area (a restaurant has a dining area, a coffee house would have a drinking area, right?) with lots of Dazbog bags of coffees, cups, t-shirts and hats stacked on black freestanding shelves.  Two Dazbog cycling jerseys had pride of place on a facia just by the front door.

Condiments for coffees…

I’m not a coffee drinker – but milk drinkers also need a pleasant place to meet and chat with friends over a drink of milk, and perhaps have a snack.

But what about the food to go with the coffee or other drink?

In a large glass case next to the order counter were offered pierogis (sausage, bacon, vegetarian), slices of different types of bread, bagels, muffins, and extremely large cookies.  There were also bottles of Coke products for non-coffee drinkers who weren’t milk drinkers, either.

I opted for a sausage pierogi and a cup of milk. (It was served in a cup, not a carton, and I expect it came from the dispenser they use to put milk into the coffees).

Three rows of different types of coffee!

Snacks and bottled drinks

My sausage pierogi consisted of sausage, scrambled eggs, and a bit of onion.

It was actually not a real pierogi, which has a different type of breading. It was an unleavened bread, but not the kind of dough that typically encases a pierogi.

This pierogi wannabe was jam-packed with filling, however. It had been microwaved and was hot. The dough was a bit doughy, but the filling was good for the most part. The sausage was spicier than I like. I also had a side of salsa that went well with it.

The Review

Service

There were two baristas behind the counter. There was no wait staff. I placed my order, my barista called out my food when it is ready and I went to the counter to pick it up.

Appearance

Very clean. Bright red and black décor set a sophisticated yet friendly tone.

Food

It did not appear as if the coffee shop had a bakery on-site, I expect all the offerings from pierogis to breads to muffins to cookies were made elsewhere and distributed to the store. For a quick snack, however, my pierogi was adequate – except for the fact that it was too spicy for my taste and wasn’t an authentic pierogi. The amount of filling inside the dough was generous.

Bathroom

The door to the women’s bathroom was very heavy. A frail old woman or someone in a wheelchair would have a hard time getting the door open, either to go in or to come out.

The bathroom itself was of generous size, and clean, with a single toilet and a large paper dispenser on the wall beside it. There was a chair and a Koala Kare baby changing station on an adjoining wall.

App

Dazbog, which is a chain headquartered in Denver, Colorado, has an app available for free. You input your name and your email address. Then they ask for your credit card which is where I stopped. You can pay for your drinks and food using this app, and set an automatic amount to tip each time, which I suppose would save a few seconds, but I do not wish my credit card number to be stored in this way.

About Dazbog

The Dazbog website is lacking. You click on the Store tab which brings up a map based on your zipcode, but the coding is faulty and the map doesn’t work (at the time of this writing). The history of the founders of Dazbog, Russian immigrant brothers Anatoly and Leonid Yuffa, is very vague and doesn’t really tell their story!

In particular, the name Dazbog is not explained. Dazbog, in Slavic mythology, is the god of the sun.

About the Culinary Curmudgeon

I will return to Dazbog one day, to sample their Chokolat which I hope is hot chocolate without any coffee flavor in it whatsoever.

At the same time, I will bring along a friend who is a coffee drinker and request an opinion of Dazbog’s signature drinks.
